THE Queen has received a PS5million pay rise after a new system of funding the monarchy came into force.

Her annual tax-free Government grant has been set at PS36.1million for 2013-14 - up from the PS31million she received for the previous year under the old system.

The Sovereign Grant came into effect this week and replaces the civil list. Buckingham Palace said yesterday the majority of the grant will be spent on the backlog of repair work in royal palaces.

Graham Smith, chief executive of antimonarchy campaign group Republic, called the extra funding immoral. He said: "While every other public body is forced to rein in its spending, the royal household is given yet more taxpayers' cash. The Windsors must learn to live within their means just like everyone else."

3 THE TUC and Unite have urged Prince Charles to protect Duchy of Cornwall workers' pay if the Government's plan to scrap the Agricultural Wages Board goes ahead.
