ONCOR ACQUIRES EXCLUSIVE LICENSES FOR DNA PROBES TO DETECT THE TELOMERES OF HUMAN CHROMOSOMES

GAITHERSBURG, Md., Aug. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Oncor, Inc. (NASDAQ: ONCR) announced today that it has obtained exclusive licenses from the Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology (Philadelphia) and the Cancer Research Campaign Technology, Inc. (England) for DNA probes that identify the telomore (physical end) of each human chromosome.
The majority of chromosome abnormalities that appear in cancer and genetic disease involve either the transfer of material from one chromosome to another, the addition to or deletion of part of a chromosome, or the addition or deletion of an entire chromosome.
Stephen Turner, Oncor's Chairman and CEO, stated: "This new telomeric DNA technology combined with Oncor's current DNA probe technology will allow, for the first time, the direct molecular detection of the majority of known chromosome abnormalities.
"We are pleased to have in-licensed this technology, which will allow Oncor to develop and market complete sets of probes to scan an individual's genome for its chromosomal integrity." Mr. Turner concluded
Mr. Turner added that the Company believes that molecular analysis of chromosome integrity will greatly extend the sensitivity of current cytogenetic analysis. Oncor believes its telomeric DNA probe sets will provide the genetic research community with the tools to provide more accurate counseling to both the parents of children with chromosome abnormalities (7 of 1,000 live-born infants has a chromosome disorder) and to couples with recurrent miscarriages, of which 50% are due to chromosome rearrangements.
Oncor develops, manufactures and markets Human Genome-based test systems for use in the early detection and management of cancer and other genetic diseases.
