1961 The shortest British title fight on record took place in Nottingham. Defending lightweight champion Dave Charnley knocked out David Hughes just 40 seconds into the first round of their title fight.

1971 Ted MacDougall scored nine goals for Bournemouth in the first round of the FA Cup against Margate - the most scored by a player in the competition proper in a single match.

1977 Walter Payton, of the Chicago Bears, rushed for an NFL single-game record 275 yards against the Minnesota Vikings.

1982 A record 15 footballers were sent off, 12 in FA Cup matches and three in the league.

2000 Former Hearts boss Jim Jefferies was appointed as new manager of Premiership strugglers Bradford.
