BORN ON THIS DAY

1491: Henry VIII. King of Enland.

1712: Jean Jacques Rousseau. French political philosopher who coined the phrase, "Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains". Rousseau owned his own personal gondola. He invented a new system of musical notation, using numbers instead of notes, and published a book on it.

1926: Mel Brooks. Film dir-ector, whose films include Blazing Saddles and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Mel's wife was the late Anne Bancroft.

1928: Sir Harold Evans.

British journalist, who fam-ously esposed the thalidomide scandal as editor of the Sunday Times. 1932: Pat Morita (deceased). Japanese-American actor who gained fame as the wise Mr Miyagi in the Karate Kid movies.

1935: John Inman (deceased). British comic actor, famous for playing Mr Humphries in Are You Being Served?

1948: Kathy Bates. British actress, whose films include Misery and Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle-Stopo CAfe.

1960: Diane-Louise Jordan. TV presenter.

1966: John Cusack. Amer-ican actor, whose films include Bullets Over Broad-way, High Fidelity and Grosse Pointe Blank. 1968: Adam Woodyatt. Brit-ish actor, famous for his role as lan Beale in East-Enders.

1971: Fabien Barthez. Footballer for Marseille, and formerly Manchester United. 1975: Likely Lad of Lar-dams (deceased). The ori-ginal Dulux dog.

1977: Mark Storrmer.

Bassist with The killers.

DIED ON THIS DAY

1836: James Madison. 4th American President. 2001: Joan Sims. British actress, who famously starred in the Carry On films and also appeared in TV series including Born and Bred, On the Up and As Time Goes By.
