A gap year that consists of activities which enhance self-development and future chosen career path, can only be good.
CATRIN EDWARDS: I believe that it depends on the student. Some of my business students have taken a gap year and started a small business, putting their learning into practice. They have then gone on to advance their learning at University and the experience of running their own business has assisted them. Travelling for a year can also be of huge benefit because it helps some students to become more independent, mature, cultured and ready to continue with the next level of education. On the other hand, a gap year can cause some students to settle for jobs that do not truly reflect their capability, they may start earning a living and become too comfortable to ever consider returning to education.
EURON HUGHES: Ideally yes. To broaden their horizons through travel or by working - possibly voluntarily. Either way a break would do young people good and/or prevent potential burnout after the huge pressure they have been subjected to during their educational journey. Do not underestimate the pressure today's young people are under - mental health issues amongst young people is on the rise and a gap year may well help prevent any potential future problems from arising.
