ON ST. PADDY'S DAY, EVERYONE IS IRISH!

CLEVELAND, March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Irish eyes will be smiling on March 17 as young and old alike celebrate the spirit of St. Patrick's Day with the wearin' o' the green. While only about 18 percent of the U.S. population can claim true Irish ancestry, "everyone" is Irish on St. Patrick's Day!

According to Phil Twersky, spring season product manager for American Greetings, "wearable" green accessories are exceptionally popular on March 17. "St. Patrick's Day falls just before the official start of spring," Twersky said. "For many people, wearing a green derby hat or a shamrock pin for the
day is a way of letting their hair down just a little. Dressing Irish' offers a way to escape from the winter doldrums." Twersky said more novelty items are sold for St. Patrick's Day than for any other holiday. "Every year, the tradition of wearing green grows in popularity," he added.
More than 175 St. Patrick's Day parades will be held in the United States this year, and Irish apparel is a must for spectators as well as marchers. Businesses and classrooms are also increasingly getting into the spirit of the day. "People are wearing everything from green sleeve garters and carnation boutonnieres to over-sized bow ties and bicycle caps with Irish slogans," Twersky said.
Surprisingly, in Ireland, St. Patrick's Day is not the exuberant occasion it is in the United States. There, it is primarily a religious holiday -- the start of a three-day period of devotion honoring St. Patrick. The day's events are capped off with a St. Patrick's Day Ball in Dublin Castle.
