OMAN : Oman opens account with four medals at Arab Games.

The Sultanate athletes opened their account with four medals on the inaugural day of the Pan Arab Games in the Qatari capital of Doha yesterday. According to information received here, Omani shooters won a silver and bronze while muscleman Abdallah al Rahbi clinched bronze in body-building. The women s tennis teams also won a bronze in the team event.

In the 50m pistol, the Omani shooting team comprising Jamnal al Hattali, Said al Hasani and Ismail al Abri won the silver behind the Saudi team. The bronze went to Bahrain. In the 50m pistol individual competition, Abdullah al Rahbi settled for bronze behind Saudi Arabia s Mohammed al Saeed and Iraq s Dhiyaa Mahroos.

Meanwhile, in the body-building competition, Omani muscleman Abdallah al Rahbi won the bronze in the 90kg category.

The event was won by Qatar s Kamal Abdulrahman while Egypt s Mohamed Abdulreheem took the silver.

In the women s team tennis competition, the Omani team comprising Fatma al Nabhani, Sarah al Balushi and Maliha al Awadi settled for the bronze medal after losing their semifinal to Egypt.

In the first singles, Maliha lost to Menatalla El Dahsahn 0-6, 1-6 but Fatma used all her experience keep Omani hopes alive by defeating Magy Mikhail 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.

However, in the deciding doubles rubber, Fatma and Sarah lost to Ola Hammoud and Yasmeen Ebada by a 6-3, 6-1 scoreline.

In the group stages, the Omani girls defeated Libya and Sudan by a identical 2-1 margin before losing to Tunisia 3-0.

In the beach volleyball, Haitham al Shuraiqi and Ahmed al Hosni started their campaign in style by beating Egyptian pair of Ahmed Abdelnaem and Galal Shahin 21-11, 21-19.

In a Pool C match, Badr al Subhi and Hassan al Balushi also recorded a victory by defeating Iraqi duo of Nasser Ali and Yasir Younu 21-7, 21-13.
