 OLYMPICS TO HAVE SPECIAL EXCITEMENT
FOR MILLIONS OF TRADING CARD COLLECTORS
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- When Jordan dunks, Magic sinks a three-pointer, and Kim Zmeskal scores a 10 at the Summer Games, millions of Americans will get a special thrill because those athletes will be center stage the next day when kids across the country gather to swap trading cards.
"The magic of trading cards is that they connect the card holder to their heroes. Nothing produces heroes more than the Olympics. Consequently, trading cards featuring those athletes will generate extra excitement for kids this summer and add to their fun," said Scott McCauley, marketing director at SkyBox International Inc. of Research Triangle Park, N.C.
SkyBox has produced a 110-card set dedicated to the 1992 USA Basketball Team called USA Basketball Collector Cards. They can be purchased at neighborhood card shops or at leading convenience, food, drug, and mass merchandise stores. Suggested retail price for an eight-card "waxpack" is $1.95.
In addition, as the exclusive licensee of the United States Olympic Committee for trading cards, SkyBox has produced Olympic Hopefuls Series, a 110-card set featuring athletes like gymnast Kim Zmeskal and swimmer Matt Biondi. Featuring America's Olympic Hopefuls for the 1992 Olympic Summer Games in Barcelona, Spain, the set also includes the original ten NBA players on the U.S. Olympic Team.
The SkyBox sets are part of a trading card industry that has grown from $200 million in 1986 to well over $1 billion in 1992. Based on a SkyBox survey of 26,000 households, approximately one out of every 10 people in the United States purchased trading cards during the past year.
The largest segment of collectors is boys 6-16 years old, with the average size of the current sports trading card collection being almost 3,600, although half of the collectors has fewer than 355 cards.
SkyBox, founded as Impel in 1989, is headquartered in Research Triangle Park, N.C. It is the largest producer and distributor of entertainment trading cards in the $1 billion plus trading card industry. In addition to U.S. OLYMPICARDS and cards licensed by the NBA, the company produces cards in conjunction with the NFL. Their entertainment lines include Marvel Universe(TM), STAR TREK(R), and Disney Collector Cards.
