OLYMPIC ATHLETES GO FOR THE GOLD
WITH MULTIMEDIA TRAINING SYSTEM FROM THE GRAPHIX ZONE
System Allows Wrestling Team to Pin Down Competitors' Moves
IRVINE, Calif., July 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The newest technology rage, multimedia, adds muscle to the training program employed by the United States Wrestling Team, assisting them in the quest for gold.
A Macintosh-based multimedia training program developed by the Graphix Zone, an industry-recognized resource center for multimedia and advanced computer graphics systems, combines video, computer animation, graphics and laser disk technology to allow wrestlers and their coaches to visually study the moves and stances of competing wrestlers.
Called the du Pont Domination System after John du Pont, team manager for the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team, the interactive multimedia system utilizes a data base search engine to put 35 hours of wrestling video at athletes' fingertips. The system also lets wrestlers, with a click of the mouse, study their own or opponents' performances over a given time period, review the action at key matches or make a survey of how different champions approach the same move. Wrestlers can also call up athlete biographies as well as detailed match statistics.
"The system allows world-class amateur wrestlers and coaches to manage and retrieve international footage in a quick yet flexible manner," said Chuck Cortright, president and chief executive officer of the Graphix Zone. "In the past, hours and hours of video footage had to be studied and these tapes had to be fast-forwarded or rewound numerous times to achieve the same results as the du Pont system."
The project took six Graphix Zone designers and programmers, working with du Pont, nearly a year to complete. According to Cortright, the Graphix Zone has begun discussions with other sports organizations that may be interested in using interactive multimedia technology to gain a competitive edge.
The Graphix Zone's 7,500-square-foot facility is based in Irvine and was founded in 1989 by Cortright and Angela Aber. The Graphix Zone is a solutions-oriented organization dedicated to the education and marketing of advanced graphics systems, specializing in those employed in multimedia, prepress and other high-end graphics applications. The company recently launched the Creator Center, a do-it-yourself multimedia production center where individuals and businesses can rent the facilities, talent and equipment needed to create state-of-the-art multimedia presentations.
