 OHIO HUNTERS TAKE 1,010 TURKEYS
ON OPENING DAY OF SPRING SEASON
COLUMBUS, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- There were 1,010 turkeys taken by hunters on the opening day today of Ohio's three-week spring wild turkey season, according to the Division of Wildlife. Hunters bagged 810 turkeys on opening day in 1991 and 791 turkeys on opening day in 1990.
Vinton County again reported the highest number of gobblers checked with 88. Vinton was followed by Hocking - 63; Athens - 54; Adams - 50; and Columbiana - 48.
A total of 28,974 turkey permits were sold for this year's turkey hunting season. Free permits, available to senior citizens and certain disabled veterans were requested by 36,881 people, however, surveys indicate that only one-third of those requesting free turkey permits actually go hunting. The Division of Wildlife estimates that approximately 42,000 hunters will participate in this year's turkey season.
Hunting for wild turkeys continues through May 16, except on Sundays/ Only bearded gobblers may be taken and hunters are reminded that they must immediately fill out and attach their temporary tag to the turkey before moving it from the place where it was shot. Turkeys must also be taken to an official checking station by 2 p.m. on the day the turkey was shot. All hunters must have a valid Ohio hunting license and turkey permit. Hunting of wild turkeys is permitted this year in 38 Ohio counties.
