OHIO FARM BUREAU APPLAUDS AGRIBUSINESS EXPANSION

COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- "The expansion of Sandusky Dressed Beef is a very positive step forward for Ohio farmers and agribusiness," according to Ohio Farm Bureau Federation Executive Vice President C. William Swank. Swank's comments came after Governor George V. Voinovich's announcement that Stewart Interest, Inc. will purchase Sandusky Dressed Beef to begin the Ohio Beef Corporation. The new corporation will create 281 jobs, while retaining 100 jobs in Erie County.
"The Ohio Farm Bureau Federation commends the departments of Development, Agriculture and the Voinovich administration's Meat Packing Task Force for their leadership in expanding this industry. It's nice this announcement can be made as we prepare to celebrate National Agriculture Week," Swank said.
Farm Bureau has been involved in conversations with pork and beef commodity groups that reflect renewed interest in livestock production in Ohio as a way to add value to farm products.
According to Ohio State University, the potential economic impact of the project is $1 billion. It is expected that the project will increase the slaughter of Ohio-grown cattle from 40,000 to 300,000 per year.
"Ohio is located near strong consumer markets, and a nearby slaughter facility helps the price situation, expands jobs and is good for the economy," concluded Swank.
