OHIO DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE WARNS CONSUMERS
TO BE INFORMED WHEN BUYING FIREWOOD
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) wants to remind consumers to be well informed when purchasing firewood this fall and winter. "It's important for consumers to understand the unit of measurement before ordering firewood," said Fred L. Dailey, ODA director. ODA enforces the unit of measurement for firewood, most commonly called the cord or fraction of a cord. ODA's Division of Weights and Measures uses the following laws to help protect consumers:
1 -- A cord is defined as 128 cubit feet when the wood is stacked. A standard cord would be eight feet long, four feet high and four feet wide.
2 -- When selling, advertising or offering firewood or stove wood for sale, terms such as rick, rack, facecord, pile or truckload are strictly prohibited.
3 -- Fireplace or stove wood is defined as: any kindling logs, boards, timbers or other wood, split or not split, advertised, offered for sale or sold as fuel.
4 -- Sellers must provide buyers with a sales invoice with the name and address of the vendor and purchaser, delivery date, quantity on which the price is based and total price.
ODA is responsible for enforcing Ohio's laws in regards to the definition, sale and unit of measurement for firewood.
