OHIO DENTAL ASSOCIATION SETS POLICY FOR USE OF LASERS IN DENTISTRY
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- A new type of dental technology is beginning to be used to treat patients in Ohio and the Ohio Dental Association (ODA) is taking strides to ensure the safety of the dental laser. This adaption of the medical and industrial lasers has the potential to change many forms of dental treatment.
At its 126th annual session, held in Columbus from Sept. 17 to 20, the ODA addressed the use of lasers in dentistry.
According to the chairman of the ODA's Council on Dental Care Programs and Dental Practice, Dennis Burns, DDS, Columbus, "To help ensure proper dental treatment with lasers is administered, the ODA has adopted a policy on the current use of lasers in dentistry. Included in our policy is the provision that only licensed dentists should use lasers, and that the lasers should be used only in strict accordance of the guidelines set down by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA)."
Currently, dental lasers have a limited application and there are other technologies that perform the same procedures as lasers.
The ODA policy calls for scientific and educational communities to develop standards for the dental applications of the laser's use in as timely a manner as possible. It also calls for dentists who currently use the laser to have a proper level of expertise of the laser's use.
