OHIO COMPANIES PLEASED WITH DAY 1 OF MEXICO FOOD SHOW

MEXICO CITY, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The 13 Ohio companies exhibiting food products at the 1993 "Festival De Alimentos Y Bebidas" are impressed with the activity during the first day of the three-day food trade show in Mexico City. Many companies say they made solid buying contacts. "We received some good leads," said Jeff Walker, Frozen Specialties, Archbold, Ohio. "They wanted price information, which means they are serious," continued Walker.
The Ohio Department of Agriculture is leading the effort to help Ohio food companies to export product to Mexico by sponsoring the largest state pavilion at the food trade show. The "Festival De Alimentos Y Bebidas" is a cost-effective way for Ohio companies like Worthington Foods to make contacts, gather market research and see what competitors are doing in the marketplace. "We've made good contacts today, and while we are here we have meetings scheduled with each of the three major supermarket chains," said Steve Dunson, Worthington Foods.
White Castle representatives participated in this show to look for and appoint a distributor for their White Castle hamburgers in Mexico. "We've met potential clients who would be interested in buying from our distributor, once we appoint one," said Bill Blake of White Castle, Columbus, Ohio.
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Espy toured the "Festival De Alimentos Y Bebidas," stopping by the Ohio-sponsored food pavilion.
Mexican buyers were particularly interested in the beef and ham shown by the Kluener Food Companies of Cincinnati and the Ohio Scotch Pine Christmas trees represented by the Ohio Christmas Tree Association.
Mexico is one of the United States' largest and fastest growing markets for such products as red meats, processed food products, poultry, dairy products and snack foods.
