OHIO BELL ANNOUNCES CALLER ID TRIAL

OHIO BELL ANNOUNCES CALLER ID TRIAL
CLEVELAND, Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Ohio Bell today announced that it

has filed an application with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio to conduct a one-year experimental trial of Caller ID service. The trial will be conducted principally in the Columbus area, but could also include other parts of the 614 area. The trial, which will involve only selected central offices specially equipped to provide the service, will be conducted under the guidelines ordered by the PUCO in its Rehearing Order issued May 21, 1992.
Caller ID is an optional service which allows a person receiving a call to see the telephone number of the person calling before the call is answered. The incoming caller's telephone number is displayed on a device attached to the telephone.
After the one-year trial, Ohio Bell will evaluate Caller ID and either discontinue new installations of the service or apply to the PUCO to continue the service on the same or modified basis in areas equipped to offer the service. If the company decides to discontinue Caller ID after the trial, customers who had the service installed during the trial period would be able to keep it, but new installations would be discontinued.
"Ohio Bell continues to be concerned about the effect per-line blocking will have on customer acceptance of Caller ID," said Ohio Bell spokesman David Kandel. "The trial will provide experience in the marketplace which will enable the company to evaluate whether or not the service can be economically justified."
The monthly charge for Caller ID will be $6.50 with a one-time installation charge of $9.25. Free per-call blocking will be available to all customers, regardless of whether or not they subscribe to Caller ID. Blocking prevents a caller's telephone number from appearing on a Caller ID display device.
Per-line blocking will be available to those who wish to subscribe to it. The monthly charge for per-line blocking will be $1.10 with a one-time installation charge of $9.30. Customers with non-published numbers who wish to subscribe to per-line blocking will receive a credit for the $1.10 monthly charge they already pay to have non-published service.
Ohio Bell plans to initiate a customer education program to inform the public about available blocking options and how caller ID works. The service should be available to customers in the trial area by April 1993, pending PUCO approval of the tariff filing.
