Engineers involved in offshore oil and gas production are all too wearily accustomed to the mass media's inability to understand the difference between an offshore production platform and a drilling rig.

Sentences such as "If drilling equipment fails it can lead to a whole site being shut down ... Lost production costs can run into millions" sadly confirm that this lack of understanding extends to this magazine. "Drilling for value" may be a cute headline --but it is misleading and misrepresents the industry's challenges (Professional Engineering No 8,2018). Gregory King, Aberdeen
