OFFICIAL GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY HELD TODAY FOR NEW
BIOPHARMACEUTICAL MANUFACTURING FACILITY BEING BUILT BY TURNER
NEW YORK, May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The official groundbreaking ceremony was held today for Genzyme's new 170,000 square foot biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Boston, according to an announcement made by The Turner Corporation, the nation's leading general builder. This facility is one of very few in its class that uses recombinant DNA technology to make FDA-approved therapeutic drugs. The ground breaking marks the successful and somewhat rare transition from a research-oriented biotech firm to a world class manufacturer of biological drugs.
The project will be designed and constructed on an extremely fast- track basis with the non-production related facilities scheduled to be completed just 16 months after award of design and construction management contracts. Achieving this schedule has required a supportive and flexible stance by the various city and state agencies, as well as an innovative plan for the simultaneous performance of architectural, engineering and construction activities.
Close coordination between Genzyme, Turner's Boston office, project architect, Architectural Resources Cambridge, Inc. and project engineer, United Engineers & Constructors, has been established to troubleshoot any problems that might slow the process.
"We are extremely excited about this project. Genzyme, one of few biopharmaceutical companies with FDA-approved biological drugs in the marketplace, has established a design and construction team on the leading edge of building technology. We're proud to be part of that team," commented George R. O'Reilly, Turner vice president and general manager of the company's Boston office.
The Genzyme project is the second FDA-licensed biological manufacturing facility to be undertaken by Turner in the Northeast. Turner is in the final stages of completion of a multipurpose biological pilot plant of Ortho Pharmaceutical, a unit of Johnson & Johnson. Turner has considerable experience in the construction of facilities related to the pharmaceutical industry. The company is currently constructing projects for Abbott Labs, Amgen, Allergan, Affymax, Baxter International, Ethicon, Merck, Rhone-Poulenc Rorer, Bristol Myers Squibb, and Boehringer-Ingleheim. Turner has operated an office in Boston since 1916 and has recently completed such well-known projects in the city as Heritage on the Garden, 125 Summer St., and the Westin Hotel at Copley Place.
Based in New York City, The Turner Corporation, through Turner Construction Company and other construction subsidiaries, is the nation's largest builder of commercial, industrial, hospital and healthcare, institutional, retail, government building and multi-unit housing projects. Operating through more than 35 offices, Turner has construction projects underway throughout the United States and abroad. During 1991, Turner completed $2.7 billion of construction.
