OFFICIAL AIRLINE GUIDES REPORTS: NUMBER OF DOMESTIC FARES UP; AIRLINE SCHEDULE CHANGES DOWN IN MAY

OAK BROOK, Ill., June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Spring airfare wars have caused the number of domestic airfares to rise dramatically. According to the most recent figures released by the Official Airline Guides, the number of domestic airfares has increased by almost 900,000; from 2.6 million airfares in 1992 to 3.5 million in May 1993. The total number of international airfares also rose slightly.
In May, domestic airfare changes decreased from 2.7 million to 2.6 million, while at the same time international airfares showed increased volatility with 2.4 million changes compared to 2.1 million changes a year earlier.
OAG, a leading travel information company, maintains flight schedules and processes fares of airlines worldwide. Through May 1993, OAG processed 24.3 million airfare changes, approximately 29 percent fewer than the 34.2 million transactions during the same period last year. OAG also said 2.6 million flight schedule changes were processed, about 19 percent more than during the same period last year.
Direct flight schedule changes decreased in May, from 412,685 in 1992 to 373,864 in 1993. The number of total direct flights, on the other hand, increased by more than 4,000.
In May, 756 airlines reported schedule information to OAG, compared to 727 airlines in May 1992.
"The sharp increase in domestic airfares resulted from recent spot airfare skirmishes," said David M. Emery, executive vice president for OAG. "Despite this rapid increase in domestic airfares, domestic airfare changes as well as airline schedule changes have slowed down."
A detailed listing of OAG schedule and airfare transactions follows.
