OAK BROOK, Ill., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Official Airline Guides (OAG), the world's leading clearinghouse of travel and travel-related data, announced the availability of its travel information via Personal Intelligent Communicators based on General Magic's Magic Cap(TM) platform. This OAG information is targeted for the business traveler on the go. OAG will offer this personal travel product on Personal Intelligent Communicators utilizing the Magic Cap environment, to be released in 1994. To accomplish this, OAG is working closely with Motorola and other members of the General Magic Alliance.
The General Magic Alliance was created in 1990 by General Magic to bring together innovative companies known for technological innovation in products and services development. The Alliance, comprised of Motorola, Sony, Philips Electronics, Apple, AT&T and Matsushita is working with other third parties to offer new hardware, software, networking and information services for the mobile professional.
"Providing OAG information on Personal Intelligent Communicators is another important step in achieving our goal of supplying our customers with travel knowledge whenever, wherever and however they choose," said Mel Trudeau, OAG's senior vice president. "This adds two-way wireless communications to the growing list of ways customers can access OAG travel information. That list currently includes print guides, on-line services, stand-alone diskette and LAN versions, fax and wireless pagers."
Seasoned business travelers are constantly faced with last minute schedule changes and flight delays or cancellations. With OAG's personal travel product, travelers have instant access to unbiased, up-to-the-minute flight options for all U.S. cities right in the palm of their hands. The traveler sends a custom flight search request into OAG using their Magic Cap communicator, specifying departure and destination cities, flight dates and desired times, and preferred class and carrier.
Within a minute, OAG returns up to five available direct flights, connections and their lowest fares along with seat availability meeting all of their specifications. With the OAG personal travel product, the traveler is far better equipped to respond quickly to inevitable changes in plans.
For added convenience, the new OAG product also includes a directory of airline reservation phone numbers and saves the itineraries and responses for multiple trips. Future releases will add reservation and ticketing capabilities as well as hotel and car rental information.
OAG teamed up with Sony Electronic Publishing to create travel software with the General Magic "look and feel." To make communications seamless and hassle free to the customer, OAG will use RadioMail for wireless communications and AT&T for wired communications capability. Choosing either a wireless or wired path, the customer can obtain OAG travel information without ever needing to know a network phone number. The OAG personal travel product automatically handles all of the communications for the customer.
These customized search requests will be billed automatically to the user's credit card; and subscribers will be able to select from a variety of subscription options. The new OAG product will be ready for customer distribution as the Magic Cap communicators become available.
