ODTE[pounds sterling] rector says university against cutting trees, not road construction.
During his speech, Acar stated that 20 years ago the ODTE[pounds sterling] administration had given permission for the road that will pass through the campus to ease the traffic in the capital city and added that what the university is against is that the way municipal and government officials are handling the issue, not the uprooting of the trees.
When asked about his views on Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoy-an saying that the government would "even destroy a mosque" if it were in the way of a new road, Acar said the ODTE[pounds sterling] administration is not against uprooting of trees or demolishing of mosques but the manner of removing the trees and replanting them elsewhere.
"If these trees are meant to be uprooted, they will be uprooted. To do this, the Board of Protection of Cultural and Natural Assets needs to give permission and if some 3,000 trees needs to be removed here, those fit for replanting need to be replanted elsewhere. The unlawful act here is, municipal officials one night raiding the campus with trucks, municipal workers and construction vehicles to destroy trees and felling some 630 trees instead of replanting them in another location," Acar said.
He also said that the university has taken legal action to prompt an investigation of the fate of the uprooted trees. (Cihan/Today's Zaman)
