ODS TO PREVIEW 100BASEVG FAST ETHERNET AT INTEROP FALL 93; ODS TO PROVIDE 100BASEVG HUB TO DESKTOP SOLUTION FOR INFINITY

DALLAS, Aug. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Optical Data Systems Inc. (ODS) (NASDAQ-NMS: ODSI) announced today plans to integrate 100BaseVG 100Mbps fast Ethernet(R) technology into the ODS Infinity(TM) intelligent switching hub. ODS will preview the technology along with Hewlett- Packard (HP) and other leading networking vendors at INTEROP(R) Fall 93 Aug. 25-27, 1993 in San Francisco Booth 1834.
100BaseVG is HP's approach to sending 100Mbps Ethernet data packets over UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) wiring and is designed to increase the speed of conventional Ethernet networks by allowing the data rate to be increased from the current 10 Mbps to 100Mbps while maintaining 10Mbps Ethernet's 2 KM area of coverage. 100BaseVG also has priority features that can be used to favor network server connections as well as multimedia applications. Because 100BaseVG operates on any grade of UTP from Category 3 (the most commonly used 10BaseT wiring) to Category 5, most users will not have to install new wiring to upgrade to fast Ethernet. 100BaseVG is currently under the guidance of the IEEE 802.12 committee and is expected to be made a draft standard in early 1994.
"100BaseVG adds to the already considerable capabilities of the Infinity," said Terry Gaston, vice president of marketing for ODS. "And with the Infinity's modular backplanes it's very easy for existing Infinity users to upgrade their Ethernet network to 100BaseVG."
"Fast Ethernet is a natural evolution from 10BaseT and is definitely picking up speed now that it's under IEEE guidance," said Marty Palka of Dataquest. "Users who have been constrained by the capacity limitations of their existing Ethernet networks now have some relief at costs projected to be less than other 100Mbps technologies. And considering that replacement of existing wiring could run $500 per desktop, a system that uses existing wiring and increases throughput 10 fold is a definite plus for the end user."
ODS plans to offer several 100BaseVG hub modules for the Infinity that will take advantage of the Infinity's multi-segment Ethernet backplane and work group switching capabilities. Additionally, the Infinity's modular backplanes will allow older Infinity hubs to be upgraded to 100BaseVG by simply switching out the Ethernet backplane. ODS also plans to sell 100BaseVG desktop adapter cards which will give them a complete hub to desktop 100BaseVG solution.
Product will be available in 1Q'94 with production quantities shipping in 2Q'94.
Dallas-based Optical Data Systems, Inc. announced the Infinity Hub product line in January 1993. The Infinity Hub represents a significant advance in intelligent hub technology, including port switching, high density modules, superior RMON based network management, and seamless integration of multiple networking standards (Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI and ATM). The Infinity was designed to optimally support integration of the finest third party internetworking components, so that ODS customers may continually upgrade their networks without replacement of the installed base of hubs. ODS is located at 1101 East Arapaho Road, Richardson, Texas 75081 and can be reached at 214-234-6400.
