 ODETICS RECORDERS OPERATING FLAWLESSLY
ON RECENT INTERNATIONAL EARTH RESOURCES PROGRAMS
ANAHEIM, Calif., May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Odetics (AMEX: O.A, O.B) announced today that space tape recorders manufactured by the company's Space Division for the European Space Agency's ERS-1 and the Japanese JERS-1 spacecraft are performing well.
The Japanese JERS-1 spacecraft has a single 77 gigabit recorder. It is being used to store Optical Sensor (OPS) and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. According to Odetics, the JERS-1 recorder is an extended- life, higher reliability version of recorders flying on the French SPOT-1 and SPOT-2 programs.
The European ERS-1 spacecraft has two Odetics recorders with 6.7 gigabit capacity each. While the ERS-1 spacecraft also has a SAR instrument on board, the recorder is only being utilized to store information obtained from the radar in the Wind (or Scatterometer) Mode, the Radar Altimeter and the Along Track Scanning Radiometer (ATSR). The ERS-1 recorder is an upgraded version of the recorders manufactured by Odetics for the United States Air Force (USAF) Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP). Thirty-two Odetics DMSP recorders have flown successfully on nine spacecraft since 1976. Two Odetics recorders on the USAF STP78-2 SCATHA program operated for 12 years and had more than 54,000 each until a down-link transmitter failed.
A total of 136 Odetics recorders have flown on free-flying spacecraft since 1971, with an overall MTBF in excess of 120,000 hours.
Odetics manufactures products that provide information and control through automation. With contracts from space organizations around the world, Odetics Space Division is the leading supplier of advanced- technology space recorders.
