ODETICS RECORDER KEY TO DETAILED GASPRA IMAGES
 ANAHEIM, Calif., July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Odetics (AMEX: O.A, O.B)

announced that a tape recorder manufactured by the company's Space Division permitted NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) to obtain detailed pictures of the asteroid Gaspra released to the public last month.
The tape recorder is on board that Galileo spacecraft which visited and photographed Gaspra -- a scientific first -- in October 1991. Because Galileo's high-gain communications antenna is still stuck in a partially stowed state, Gaspra images were played back indirectly from the Odetics tape recorder through the low-gain antenna at distances of up to 430 million kilometers (266 million miles).
If the high-gain antenna is not freed by the time the spacecraft reaches the planet Jupiter in December 1995, the same playback strategy with technical enhancements in data processing and communications can be used. According to JPL, this is only a contingency plan as freeing the high-gain antenna is still possible.
The tape recorder on board Galileo is similar to 135 other Odetics recorders that have flown on free-flying spacecraft since 1971, with an overall MTBF (mean time between failure) in excess of 120,000 hours.
Odetics manufactures products that provide information and control through automation. With contracts from space organizations around the world, the company's Space Division is the leading supplier of advanced-technology space recorders.
