ODETICS ATL PRODUCTS ADDS UNISYS TO CUSTOMER LIST

ANAHEIM, Calif., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- In its fourth major announcement since the beginning of its fiscal year (April 1, 1993), ATL Products, a wholly owned subsidiary of Odetics (AMEX: OA, OB), today disclosed a multiyear agreement with Unisys Corp., Blue Bell, Pa. The agreement calls for ATL Products to provide ACL5480(TM) automated tape library subsystems for integration into a product line Unisys is announcing as the USL2880 (Unit Storage Library).
The exact terms of the agreement were not disclosed for competitive reasons.
Dr. Kevin Daly, president of ATL Products, said, "Unisys' position as the third-largest supplier of information technology products to the federal government, coupled with its strong presence in the commercial market, reinforce the strategic nature of this agreement. We believe the agreement provides significant opportunities for both ATL Products and Unisys."
The ACL5480 automates the storage and use of computer media known as 3480 tape cartridges. An entry-level ACL5480 configuration accommodates multiple tape drives and 288 cartridges. Users can add expansion units as on-line data storage requirements increase.
"There is a growing trend for companies to use Enterprise Systems, such as the Unisys A Series and 2200 Series systems, to provide faster access for the warehousing of huge amounts of corporate-wide data formerly kept totally off-line," explained Daly. "This demand for faster access to increased gigabytes of history files, requires the speed, accuracy and economic attractiveness of 3480 tape, and data center management can benefit from the productivity improvements provided by the library automation."
"Unisys has spent nine months integrating the Odetics product with our storage software architecture for data center automation, already used by customers with high-end libraries in the U.S., Europe and Asia," said Carmin Lynch, G.M. of Unisys Peripheral Products Division. "By surrounding the Odetics ACL5480 with Unisys Robohost and Roboserv Software, we provide our users with a seamless, operations transparent access to a new, enabling technology."
Unisys Corp. is a leading information systems company with 60,000 customers in 100 countries. The company is a major supplier of information services and technology to financial service, government, telecommunications, airline and other commercial markets.
Odetics specializes in the design and manufacture of systems and subsystems to automate the storage, distribution and management of information.
