OCTOBER SALES INCREASE 9.2 PERCENT FOR THE MAY DEPARTMENT STORES COMPANY

 ST. LOUIS, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The May Department Stores Company (NYSE: MA) today reported preliminary sales of $822.3 million for the four-week period ended Oct. 30, a 9.2 percent increase over $753.3 million in the similar year-ago period.
 Sales for the first nine months of fiscal 1993 were $7.54 billion, up 7.5 percent from sales of $7.02 billion during the same period a year ago.
 Department store sales for October totaled $668.9 million, up 8.6 percent or $53.0 million from last year. Sales for Payless ShoeSource were $153.4 million, an increase of 11.7 percent or $16.0 million from last year's similar period.

 (A) Store-for-store sales represent sales of those stores open during both years.
 During the month, May opened five new department stores and 27 net new Payless ShoeSource stores. Lord & Taylor opened department stores at North Point Mall in North Atlanta, Ga., and at North Shore Mall in Boston; Robinsons-May opened department stores at Fashion Plaza in West Covina, Calif., and at Glendale Galleria in Glendale, Calif.; and Filene's relocated a department store to a new location at the North Shore Mall in Boston.
 Sales have been restated to exclude the sales of stores which have been closed and not replaced. Year-to-date revenues, including sales of nonreplaced closed stores and finance charge revenue, were $7.82 billion in 1993 and $7.54 billion in 1992.
 The May Department Stores Company is the largest department store retailer in the United States, operating 310 department stores and 3,699 Payless ShoeSource stores.
