OCTOBER DOMESTIC COMPARABLE STORE SALES DECLINED 0.4 PCT. AT WOOLWORTH
 CORPORATION
NEW YORK, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Woolworth Corporation (NYSE: Z) reported that domestic comparable store sales for the four weeks ended Oct. 31, 1992, declined 0.4 percent from the corresponding prior-year period.
Total sales (domestic and foreign) for the four-week period rose 0.7 percent to $722 million from $717 million.
Domestic sales for the four-week period decreased 4.3 percent to $375 million from $392 million in the corresponding prior-year period. Total domestic sales for 1992 reporting periods do not include sales from some 900 U.S. stores covered by the company's accelerated store- redeployment program announced in January.
Foreign sales, expressed in U.S. dollars, rose 6.8 percent. If foreign exchange rates had remained constant, foreign sales would have increased 7.3 percent and total sales would have increased 0.9 percent.
For the cumulative 39 weeks ended Oct. 31, 1992, domestic comparable store sales increased 1.6 percent from the corresponding prior-year period.
Total sales (domestic and foreign) for the 39-week period rose 0.7 percent to $6,893 million from $6,844 million in the corresponding year-earlier period.
Domestic sales for the 39-week period decreased 1.7 percent to $3,911 million from $3,978 million, and foreign sales, expressed in U.S. dollars, increased 4.0 percent. If foreign exchange rates had remained constant, foreign sales would have increased 2.5 percent and total sales would have increased 0.1 percent.
Harold E. Sells, chairman and chief executive officer, said, "We are pleased with the strength shown by foreign sales. The decline in domestic comparable store sales reflects strong sales during the same period last year produced by heavy promotional activity in athletic footwear."
