OCTOBER 14 Teenager passes his driving test OCTOBER 26 He's caught doing 125mph on A90; Idiot gets 18-month ban.

A TEENAGE driver was caught doing 125mph in his performance car - just days after passing his test.

Vern Ross, 17, was clocked driving dangerously and trying to impress two young cousins in his Peugeot 306 GTI on the A90 Peterhead to Aberdeen road.

Yesterday, Ross, of Scotstown Lodge, Aberdeen, escaped a jail sentence - but was banned from driving for 18 months and ordered to do 150 hours of community service.

Sheriff David Hall told him: "This was ludicrous behaviour on your part. You put others at serious risk."

Aberdeen Sheriff Court heard Ross had passed his test just 12 days before he was caught speeding down the road in the dark on October 26 last year.

At an earlier trial, officers told how they spotted his car overtaking two vehicles at speed near the end of a stretch of a dual carriageway.

They said the teenager raced past the cars on a narrowing stretch of road.

Ian Warburton, prosecuting, asked PC Alan Comery: "If a vehicle had pulled out of one of the junctions, what would have happened?"

The officer replied: "I would imagine that it wouldn't have ended well at all."

He said when they stopped Ross, he apologised for driving in a "stupid" manner.

Sentencing Ross yesterday, Sheriff Hall told the teenager, now 18, it was obvious he was speeding to show off.

He added: "It's appropriate that you carry out community service. I think it would bring out to you the seriousness of what you did."

He also ordered him to resit an extended test.

Ross refused to comment as he left court.

Last night, Chief Inspector Ian Wallace, of Grampian's Roads Policing Department, said: "I have little doubt it could have ended in a catastrophic tragedy.

"A powerful car driven at a ridiculous speed, a male teenage driver with very limited driving experience, teenage girls as passengers and a busy route which has a recognised collision history.

"Everybody was lucky on that day."
