OCCIDENTAL CONFIRMS GAS DISCOVERY IN PAKISTAN

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Occidental Petroleum Corp. announced today that it has successfully confirmed a gas discovery in the Ratana Concession Area located about 60 miles southwest of the capital city of Islamabad.
Ratana No. 2 flowed at a stabilized rate of 23 million cubic feet of gas and 938 barrels per day of 45-degree API-gravity condensate through a 1-inch choke from an interval of 376 feet in the Patala and Lockhart zones between 16,024 feet and 16,400 feet. Further drilling and testing are required to determine the extent of the reservoirs. A gas sales pipeline is located about one mile from the well and a sales agreement has been reached with Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Co. which will facilitate placing the well on early production.
In announcing the results of the confirmation well, Dr. Ray R. Irani, chairman, president and chief executive officer, said, "Natural gas has a ready market in Pakistan and is a valuable asset. Production facilities are being installed and we expect to be selling gas in the near future."
The very large Ratana structure was identified by Occidental as a result of extensive seismic surveys. Ratana No. 1, located 5 miles east of Ratana No. 2, was drilled in 1988-89 and tested at a rate of 9.4 million cubic feet of gas and 300 barrels of condensate per day from one zone. Mechanical problems prevented a complete evaluation of the well.
Occidental is the operator of the Ratana Concession Area with a 40.91 percent interest after commerciality. The remaining participation is held by the government of Pakistan with a 25.0 percent interest, Oil and Gas Development Corp. with a 25.0 percent interest, Pakistan Oil Fields Ltd. with a 4.545 percent interest and Attock Oil Co. Ltd. with a 4.545 percent interest.
