OCCIDENTAL ANNOUNCES THIRD GAS DISCOVERY IN MALAYSIA

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Occidental Petroleum Corp. announced today that Occidental Petroleum (Malaysia) Ltd. tested gas and condensate from a carbonate reef located offshore in the 4.2-million-acre Block SK-8, 70 miles southeast of the large Jintan gas field discovered in April 1992.
Selasih-1 flowed 41.9 million cubic feet of gas per day and 283 barrels per day of 45-degree API gravity condensate through a 2-inch choke from 197 feet of perforations between 4,331 feet and 4,528 feet. The gas contains approximately 2 percent carbon dioxide and no hydrogen sulfide. Water depth at the well location is 289 feet.
In making the announcement, Dr. Ray R. Irani, chairman, president and chief executive officer, said that Occidental has made three gas discoveries on Block SK-8 and will drill additional reef prospects in the 1993 drilling program.
"We are very encouraged by the success of our gas reef exploration program and are confident that additional gas discoveries will be made. Discussions have been initiated with Petronas, the Malaysian state oil company, and prospective buyers to process the gas through a liquefied natural gas facility and market the LNG internationally," Irani said.
Occidental's Jintan-2 appraisal well confirmed last November a gas-in-place volume of about 4 trillion cubic feet in the Jintan field. The well flowed 64.4 million cubic feet of gas and 620 barrels per day of condensate.
The discovery well, Jintan-1, was tested last April at 32.9 million cubic feet of gas and 832 barrels per day of condensate.
Occidental is the operator of Block SK-8 with a 37.5 percent interest. Nippon holds a 37.5 percent interest and Petronas Carigali holds the remaining 25 percent interest.
