LOS ANGELES, Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Occidental Petroleum Corp. announced today that it has made its fifth major gas discovery in a large carbonate reef offshore East Malaysia, bringing to more than 6 trillion cubic feet the estimated combined gas-in-place of the discoveries in the SK-8 Block.
Cili Padi-1, the fifth discovery well, flowed at an aggregate daily rate of 94.5 million cubic feet of gas and 614 barrels of 38.4- to 41-degree API gravity condensate from separate tests of two zones totaling 264 feet in a gross gas column of 1,430 feet. The gas contains approximately 4 percent carbon dioxide and less than 20 parts per million hydrogen sulfide. Water depth is 295 feet.
The lower zone flowed at a maximum daily rate of 43.5 million cubic feet of gas and 298 barrels of 38.4-degree API gravity condensate through a 1-inch choke with a well head pressure of 2,089 psi from 132 feet of perforations between 7,628 feet and 7,760 feet subsea. The upper zone flowed at a maximum daily rate of 51 million cubic feet of gas and 316 barrels of 41-degree API gravity condensate through a 1 1/2-inch choke with a well head pressure of 1,397 psi from 132 feet of perforations between 7,071 feet and 7,202 feet subsea.
Dr. Ray R. Irani, chairman, president and chief executive officer, said, "This discovery clearly enhances the feasibility of the LNG-3 project, which is currently being evaluated by Occidental, PETRONAS and Nippon Oil. Cili Padi is very near the Selasih discovery announced earlier this year and could facilitate a cluster-type development of both fields."
Four additional exploratory wells will be drilled in the current 1993-1994 campaign, two of which will be on large reef structures on the recently acquired SK-3 Block.
Occidental is the operator of the 4.2 million-acre Block SK-8, with a 37.5 percent interest. Nippon Oil holds a 37.5 percent interest, and PETRONAS Cargali holds the remaining 25 percent.
