OBSERVATIONS.

NAA crossed record-setting membership thresholds this spring in terms of its membership. I'm happy to report that we now represent all-time highs in units (9,735,022) and total members (82,611). Our 157 affiliates comprise 79 percent industry members and 21 percent associate (supplier partner) members.

No doubt there is great satisfaction-not to mention value--when realizing this accomplishment. Add in record-setting attendance and exposition numbers from Apartmentalize in Denver last month and all can feel proud about our upward trend.

Moving on to this month's issue of units Magazine, our cover story looks at how many apartment communities continue to make incremental steps--or are totally diving in--toward operating a paperless office. A goal (it not a dream) of many for years, "The Paperless Office" on pg. 27 reports how this strategy improves the resident experience, and also offers a few tips for those who have learned lessons during their implementations along the way.

The apartment industry continues to advance in marketing techniques. In "3-D Images Help Community Outperform its Marketing Budget" on pg. 33, you'll learn effective, alternative approaches to lease-ups--and with demand and ongoing construction continuing in so much of the country, many of us are in that competitive situation right now.

NAA's recent report "U.S. Barriers to Apartment Construction Index" provides breakthrough data on how challenging it is to develop in markets. The report studies 58 markets overall and the top 5 easiest and most challenging are profiled on pg. 36. The full report can be downloaded at www.naahq.org/barriers.

The industry has long struggled with some of the management required behind Section 8 vouchers. In "It's Not the Source, It's the Strings," NAA urges Congress and HUD to act now and improve the HCV Program.

For those who missed Apartmentalize, NAA recognized the best in the industry with its 2019 NAA Excel Awards program. Winning apartment executives, staff members, communities and NAA-affiliated apartment associations were announced last month in Denver. To read their profiles of success, please turn to "2019 NAA Excel Awards" on pg. 53.

Finally, units Magazine will present highlights from Apartmentalize as well as session recap articles in the August issue. Have a great summer!
