OBJECT DESIGN INTRODUCES RELEASE 2.0 OF OBJECTSTORE OBJECT-ORIENTED DATABASE; INDUSTRY'S LEADING ODBMS GAINS ENHANCEMENTS IN FIRST UPGRADE
 VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Object Design, Inc. today introduced Release 2.0 of ObjectStore, the industry's leasing object-oriented database management system (ODBMS) software for networked UNIX(R) workstations at high-end personal computers.
 "Object Design believes its customers are the key to ObjectStore's success. Most of the enhancements in version 2.0 are a result of direct customer feedback from strategic partners like IBM, SunSoft, Inc., NeXT Computer and our international user group," said William Blundon, Object Design's vice president of marketing.
 The new version, which has been in beta test at customer sites around the world since July, begins shipping next month. Major enhancements to ObjectStore in Release 2.0 include:
 -- the industry's most advanced ODBMS schema evolution facilities,
 enabling software developers to more quickly and easily modify
 and maintain object and class definitions as their databases
 evolve;
 -- greater support for ObjectStore applications running in
 heterogeneous networks with multi-vendor server and client
 computers;
 -- support for so-called "file databases," that allow easier,
 more flexible administration of ObjectStore files in native
 operating systems and on ObjectStore-managed raw disk
 partitions;
 -- support for CD-ROM optical media, required in multimedia and
 imaging systems; and
 -- enhanced security features that allow application developers
 to perform sophisticated authentication of users over the
 network.
 "Our mission is to continue to lead the industry with ODBMS products and services that make object-oriented applications the best practical solution available for developers of today's increasingly complex applications," stated Ken Marshall, president and CEO of Object Design. "With release 2.0, we are significantly raising the benchmark by which all commercial object database products will be evaluated."
 ObjectStore is unequaled for application developers seeking a tool for managing complex objects among workgroup-style applications in a networked, client/server environment. ObjectStore's Virtual Memory Mapping Architecture makes it ideal for developers building multimedia frameworks for next-generation, groupware-style applications.
 To maintain a high level of software quality, Object Design has beta tested Release 2.0 at eight customer sites including Lucid, Inc., Autotrol and GTE.
 "The combination of superior interactive performance and single- level storage is why Lucid initially chose ObjectStore as the object repository for our Energize C++ programming environment," noted Teddy Rosenberg, vice president of marketing at Lucid, Inc. "Now, with the new features of 2.0 such as shema evolution, enhanced heterogeneity and security and support for CD-ROM, Object Design extends ObjectStore's technology edge in the ODBMS market."
 Pricing for ObjectStore development licenses is on a per seat basis, ranging from $1,495 to $6,000 depending upon the platform and number of customer sites for which licenses are provided. Runtime license pricing is also available for commercial software vendors and development organizations providing applications to both internal and external users.
 With a 40 percent worldwide market share, ObjectStore is the fastest-selling and most widely distributed ODBMS product. The software is now installed on thousands of workstations worldwide and more than 300 companies are currently developing systems and applications based on ObjectStore. These include such leading companies as Boeing; Computervision; Ericsson; IBM; Martin Marietta; NCR Corporation; NEC; NeXT Computer; Olivetti; SunSoft, Inc.; Southwestern Bell and Texas Instruments.
 ObjectStore is available for Windows 3.1, Sun 4, IBM AIX 3.1, Digital ULTRIX 4.1, Hewlett-Packard, NCR 3000, and other UNIX systems V.4 platforms.
 Object Design is the revenue, market share and installed-base leader in the object-oriented database management systems market worldwide. The company's principal product -- ObjectStore -- is a completely distributed database for UNIX, Windows(R) and other popular operating systems. Object Store is designed to store, distribute and manage ALL forms of data and is complete with a database engine, professional development tools and a visual programming environment. The company also offers comprehensive training and consulting services. Headquartered in Burlington, Mass., Object Design maintains regional offices in Chicago; Los Angeles; San Mateo, Calif.; Sydney, Australia; and Tokyo.
