Byline: Daily News

SIMI VALLEY - A former resident and businessman was buried Saturday with full military honors in Orem, Utah.

Ralph Nelson Whitney was 68 when he died March 12 in Utah after a long battle with kidney failure. He had owned and operated Whitney Chevron in Simi Valley, and later Whitney's Auto and RV with his son Gary.

Mr. Whitney was a lifetime Rotarian who was dedicated to serving his community. He was Rotary president from 1967 to 1968. He loved people and never walked away without lending a hand and a moment of humor, friends said.

Whitney was born July 16, 1931, in Gladwin, Mich., the fifth of five children born to Leroy and Gladys Whitney.

He grew up primarily in Otsigo and Grand Rapids, Mich. He served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War.

After a two-year pen-pal courtship, he married Marty Hamson. They were married for 45 years.

The couple lived in Van Nuys and Simi Valley, where they raised four children.

When he retired, he and his wife moved to Orem, where he enjoyed hobbies including golf, woodworking, garage sales and making friends out of strangers.

Whitney was preceded in death by his parents, sister Janice Winchell and nephew Jim Whitney.

He is survived by his wife, Marty; sons Gary Whitney of Moorpark and Dan Whitney of Simi Valley; daughters Kathy Scranton of Arizona and Carrie Whitney of Orem; seven grandchildren; and siblings Jim and Don Whitney and Helen Moerland, all of Michigan. Other survivors include his adopted daughter, Kris Anderson, and numerous family members.
