JUNCTION CITY - Michael "Mike" John Bonner of Junction City died Dec. 8 of cancer. He was 72. No service is planned.
He was born July 18, 1936, in Beaumont, Calif., to Kenneth and Eleanor Matthews Bonner. He married Virginia Faber in 1965 in Reno, Nev. They later divorced.
He graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles with a master's degree in economics. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a pension fund manager and worked for assorted nonprofit agencies.
Survivors include his former wife; two sons, Mike of Junction City and Matthew of Leavenworth, Kan.; two daughters, Melinda Bonner of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Anne Bonner of Eugene; a brother, Patrick of Arkansas; and nine grandchildren.

He was born June 24, 1918, in Louisiana to Orren and Janet DeLoach Champer. He married Vivian Johns on Nov. 3, 1945.
Champer attended the University of Pittsburgh. He served in the Marines from 1942 to 1947, including service in Guadalcanal, Normandy, North Africa and Italy, attaining the rank of chief pharmacist's mate. He owned a credit collection business in New York City and wrote books and papers about Shakespeare's plays.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Janet Champer of Mississippi; a son, Robert of Eugene; a sister, Nena of Mississippi; and four grandchildren.

She was born April 21, 1957, in Oakland, Calif., to Edmund and Mary Hill Jacobs. She married Anthony DeVico on April 27, 1985, in Alexandria, Va.
She graduated from William & Mary University in Williamsburg, Va., with bachelor of science degrees in biology and psychology. She was an airline flight attendant and customer service manager, an outdoor educational instructor and an animal clinic receptionist.

SPRINGFIELD - Russell Leroy "Butch" Gates Jr. of Springfield died Nov. 27 of a massive coronary at age 62. A celebration of life will be held later.
He was born June 19, 1946, in Eugene. He married Phoebe Henderson on June 25, 2004, in Eugene.
He graduated from South Eugene High School in 1964. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He worked for various wood products companies, including Eagle Veneer.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, David, Terry, Patrick and Russell; four daughters, Sheila, Serena, Trisha and Laura; and many siblings.

She married Clyde Gilham in 1978 in Saginaw. They later divorced.
She graduated from Cottage Grove schools. She was a caregiver and worked at the Rocking Chair Nursing Home in Cottage Grove.
Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Shepherd-Ferren and Deborah Farris, both of Cottage Grove; two sons, Duane Shepherd and Sonny Shepherd, both of Cottage Grove; a brother, Dennis "Butch" Campbell of Cottage Grove; her former husband, Dallas Shepherd of Cottage Grove; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Edgar C. "Ed" Torrence of Eugene died Dec. 3 of cancer at age 98. A memorial service will be later in Asheville, N.C.
He was born Nov. 30, 1910, in North Carolina. He married Mary Deming on June 6, 1942.
He held a bachelor's degree in business, a master's degree in physical education, and two master's degrees from Yale Divinity School. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserve as a lieutenant colonel. He was an executive with YMCA International.

She graduated from business college in Washington, D.C. She worked for the Office of Health Education and Welfare agency in Washington, D.C., until 1961, when she became administrative assistant to the president of the University of Oregon. She retired in 1968.
