O-T-Cs target toenail fungus.

NEW YORK -- About 10% of the adult population of the United States suffers from toenail fungus, or onychomycosis, and that prevalence has created a huge market for over-the-counter treatments.

Moberg Pharma AB is among the suppliers offering products to treat nail fungus, which can be difficult to treat and frequently recurs. The company, which has expanded its antifungal product lineup in recent years, says that its Kerasal Fungal Nail Renewal product has a patented formula that combines the keratolytic, nail-softening and hydrating effects of propylene glycol, urea and lactic acid to deeply penetrate the nail and restore its healthy appearance.

"In a recent clinical study," the brand's website states, "almost eight out of 10 users saw improvement in nail appearance within two weeks, and 92% of users reported improvement over an eight-week period. Duration of treatment varies according to severity, but in many cases three to six months of application may be required to achieve satisfactory results."

Kramer Consumer Healthcare, meanwhile, says its Fungi-Nail product is the No. 1 pharmacist-recommended antifungal nail product in the category, and it cites IRI data indicating that it is the market share leader as well. Advertising, along with innovation and well-timed, well-executed promotions, have been the major driver of FungiNail's success, according to company officials, who say the approach has helped the brand triple its sales in the past five years.

Profoot Inc. nail fungus products sell under the ProClearz brand, which the company says is the only one on the market to use tolnaftate, billed as the only active ingredient that can prevent a fungal infection.

The ProClearz Anti-Fungal Pen promises to cure and prevent fungal infections on the skin around, adjacent to and under nails. It comes in a convenient pen dispenser with a superfine tip that reaches infected areas that rival products can't reach, according to the company. The Profoot antifungal line includes ProClearz Fungi-Cide PM, an overnight formula help cure fungal infections while the patient sleeps, and ProClearz Fungal Shield.

Profoot notes that toenail fungus and skin fungus, such as athlete's foot, often manifest together, and both should be treated at the same time in order to reduce the risk of recurrence.

Another competitor in the category is Dr. Canuso Skincare, a company that was founded by podiatric surgeon Dr. Dana Canuso. The company's Healthy Nail System features two products. After filing affected nails with an emery board, users are instructed to apply one pump of the foot repair serum all over their foot, including the toenails. After that product dries, users then apply a light coast of the Fungal Nail Eraser product around, under and adjacent to the affected nails.
