O'Kane to spearhead Essa early warning alert system.

MIKE O'KANE is not only Ladbrokes' trading director, but has taken on the role as head bookmaker at Essa, the European Sports Security Association, f ollowing the retirement of Frank Mahon from Bwin.

Essa has nothing like the extensive political organisation of the ABB, but is purely an early warning pyramid alert system, with O'Kane now deciding the seriousness of issues such as Sunday's Chievo v Catania draw market.

The answer is not very. It was a typical late-season Italian game where a draw suited both sides and of which bookmakers are now highly wary.

Essa assists that caution and alerts the authorities to keep an eye on things.

Most of us grew up in a culture where bookmakers cut prices to reduce demand, but bafflingly the reverse can now happen, particularly via betting exchanges.

As a price shortens, it creates a steamroller effect, with the whole world lumping on. One whisper creates an avalanche.

Sometimes it's good info, others not so good ... or perhaps the Essa spotlight has an effect!
