Scotland 1 Russia 2 Group I, Hampden Pk

JOHN McGINN joined Stephen O'Donnell in the punishment block last night as Scotland crashed to Russia at Hampden Park.

Aston Villa ace McGinn (above) opened the scoring in the 10th minute with his first international goal.

But Russia equalised through skipper Artem Dzyuba five minutes before half-time. And Kilmarnock right-back O'Donnell, who hit the post with an early closerange chance, diverted the ball into his own net for a 59th-minute winner.

McGinn said: "We have been punished tonight. We were in a really good position in a game we needed to win.

"We were on the front foot and everyone will agree we started well and showed what we're capable of.

"But then we dropped back and invited Russia on to us and they punished us."

Captain Andy Robertson said: "It was as if our goal scared us. So annoying."
