O'Brien steps quietly into Whisperview breeding role; GROUP RACES OF THE DAY.

ALL bar likely pacemaker Encompassing changed hands at auction, headed by Beethoven, who was knocked down to Hugo Merry for EUR260,000 at the 2008 Goffs Million sale. But Ballydoyle's first string is last year's Sussex Stakes winner Rip Van Winkle, a rare Italian sales purchase by the Coolmore team, writes Nancy Sexton.

Victory by Beethoven would be particularly sweet for Aidan O'Brien since he and his wife Anne-Marie bred Beethoven under their Whisperview Trading banner. The pair also bred another of this season's leading performers by Oratorio in Superlative Stakes winner King Torus.

Canford Cliffs has done much to raise the profile of Tagula this season and he will be a hot favourite to take his third Group 1 of the season. Well known as a sire of fast two-year-olds and tough sprinters, Tagula has been available to breeders in the past two seasons for around just EUR4,000 at Rathbarry Stud, which also raised Canford Cliffs.

Not so well known is Premio Loco's sire, Prized. The 1989 Breeders Cup Turf hero is the sire of 2006 Grade 1 Donn Handicap winner Brass Hat, while in Europe the son of Kris S has also been represented by Prizeman, winner of the 2000 Listed Washington Singer Stakes for Richard Hannon.

Now 24-years-old, Prized stands at O'Sullivan Farms in West Virginia for $3,500.

Premio Loco is the best foal out of the 1997 Cheveley Park Stakes runner-up Crazee Mental.
