Nursing theory; utilization & application, 5th ed.

Nursing theory; utilization & application, 5th ed.

Ed. by Martha Raile Alligood.

Elsevier Mosby

476 pages

This fifth edition is the expanded and updated version of previous editions, and illuminates theory-based nursing practice for nursing programs, in-service education programs for nursing staff development, and especially advanced practice nursing courses in Master's and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs. Alligood (nursing, East Carolina University) and her contributors present 22 chapters divided into three parts: conceptualization; application; and expansion; and three sections: nursing philosophies, nursing models; and nursing theories. Part I provides background and context for the nature of theory application, with nursing history to current theory, nursing models and science, and presents moral obligations inherent in nursing. The second part describes the "heart and soul" of the text with presentation of philosophies, models, and theories as critical thinking structures. Finally, Part III presents areas for more theory-based nursing practice applications for research and practice, and covers issues of safety and quality. Nursing Theory is an important book for faculty and students at all levels of nursing. There is a glossary, case histories, critical thinking exercises, references, and tables and figures.
