Nursing education perspectives and a renewed focus on nursing education research.

AS YOU HAVE REFLECTED ON YOUR TEACHING AND RESEARCH, perhaps you have wondered about the nursing literature and tried to distinguish between types of publications--refereed and nonrefereed journals, newsletters, and magazines. Periodical literature in nursing comes in many forms, all serving the discipline and the profession.

It is not unusual for professional organizations such as the National League for Nursing to have several avenues by which to serve members and the larger professional community. For example, the NLN publishes the quarterly NLN Report, two biweekly e-newsletters, the NLN Member Update and Faculty Development Bulletin, Nursing Education Policy, special news bulletins from the CEO, and reports from task groups and advisory councils. Nursing Education Perspectives (NEP) is the NLN's scholarly journal. Our primary purpose, as with other scholarly journals, is to disseminate research and innovative program initiatives to members of the discipline. In fact, we have a renewed focus on publishing nursing education research, and plan to devote significant pages to research reports in future issues. Overall, NEP provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and information regarding nursing education, faculty issues, and the design, implementation, and evaluation of innovative nursing education programs.

Editorial content for NEP is guided by the editor and editorial board members, all of whom are invited to serve for specified terms by the journal editor. While all members of the editorial board are NLN members, they do not officially represent the organization in their editorial deliberations. Yet, they are knowledgeable and aware of the need for consistency between the mission and goals of the NLN and the mission of the journal.

The review of manuscripts submitted to NEP is similar to the review process used by other scholarly, refereed journals. We have a panel of manuscript reviewers, chosen from among the scientific community served by NEP. We invite all authors published in NEP to join the manuscript review panel, and we also disseminate a call for reviewers at the annual NLN Education Summit. Many manuscript reviewers also serve as reviewers for other scholarly journals and consider this a professional responsibility. Neither reviewers nor editorial board members receive compensation for their contributions, nor do authors of manuscripts. Again, this is consistent with the guidelines used within the profession by other refereed journals.

Each manuscript submitted to NEP is reviewed by a minimum of three reviewers (referees) and then also by the editor. Final disposition of the manuscript is determined by the editor, based, of course, on the reviewers' comments and recommendations. NLN staff do not participate in the selection of the editorial content of the journal, even though it is owned by the organization. Again, this procedure is consistent with that of other professional organizations that have official journals.

Some content published in NEP is determined by the NLN. For example, a message from the NLN president is included in every issue, and there are organizational updates published in the column titled "Headlines from the NLN." All other content, including original articles and column content, is determined by the editorial board and the editor.

We are committed to advancing the scholarship in nursing education, both through NEP and the NLN. We invite you to join the team, as manuscript authors and reviewers, and, importantly, to send us your research reports.
