Nurses charged PS20 a day just to park at work Fury as hospital hikes fees 143% EXCLUSIVE BY IAN FLETCHER HARD-UP nurses are being made to fund hospital car park improvements - with their cost of parking at work more than doubling to PS20 a day.

The increase raises the charge by PS12 - up from PS8.20 - to cover the building of extra spaces and will be in place for four months.

Bosses at Kettering General Hospital claim the move will discourage parking by shoppers.

Sally Mortimer, of union Unite, called the charge ludicrous. She said: "Cash-strapped NHS staff appear to be bearing the burden of car park building.

"The management seem to have forgotten staff received a miserly one per cent rise." Ms Mortimer said employees must either pay PARKING the PS20 a day throughout the four months of building work, or park up to 15 minutes away and make their way on foot in all weathers to care for the sick and vulnerable. Bosses had FREE proposed a minibus service, but it was unclear how frequent it would be, she said.

Ms Mortimer added: "With reports of nurses using food banks across the UK, using this fee to ration demand is ludicrous."

The work will create an extra 240 spaces. The hospital said: "The PS20 is to ensure patients and visitors are able to access spaces by discouraging people from parking here all day.
