Shoucri presents the application of the method of characteristics for the numerical solution of hyperbolic-type partial differential equations, with particular attention to the Vlasov equation and other equations pertinent to plasma physics. The text includes examples presented with possible combination with fractional step methods in the case of several dimensions. The methods are quite general and applicable to different equations of hyperbolic type in mathematical physics. The text also includes examples demonstrating the application of the method of characteristics to fluid equations, for the numerical solution of the shallow water equations and of the equations of the incompressible ideal magnetohydrodynamic flows in plasmas.
