Nuance Announces Winners of Successful Dragon NaturallySpeaking User Contest.

Throngs of Dragon NaturallySpeaking Users from all Walks of Life Come Forward to Share Their Stories; Three Winners Chosen to Receive Garmin GPS Unit, Dragon Upgrades

BURLINGTON, Mass. -- Nuance Communications (NASDAQ: NUAN), a leading provider of speech and imaging solutions, today announced the winners of its "What are YOU Talking About?" contest, which invited Dragon[R] NaturallySpeaking[R] users to share their unique experiences using the world's most popular speech recognition solution. Nuance introduced the contest in support of Dragon NaturallySpeaking's ten-year anniversary to encourage users to share their personal stories about how Dragon has improved their lives.

A testament to Dragon's broad reach and impact on those who use it, the contest responses were overwhelming, with literally hundreds of Dragon NaturallySpeaking users submitting unique and exciting stories. People from all walks of life - college students, novelists, teachers, artists, grandmothers and grandfathers, veterans, doctors, poets, genealogists, bloggers, lawyers - submitted amazing stories of improved productivity, creativity, and just plain fun, using Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

Three winning entries - in the categories of Most Creative Use, Greatest Productivity Gain, and Greatest Personal Impact - were selected by a panel of judges from the hundreds of exceptional stories received, and Nuance is pleased to announce the following winners:

Most Creative Use - Len Checchio

For the past thirty years, Len Checchio has maintained a journal chronicling the details of his favorite hobby - fly fishing. Checchio has regularly recorded in painstaking detail his various fishing locations, water temperature and levels, types of flies, equipment used, and more. This journaling process has been a time-consuming one for Checchio, who has written hundreds of journal pages over the years, all by hand. Often, Checchio will refer to notes from years past when he is revisiting a favorite fishing spot, or to confirm that he is using the right fly, but the data that Checchio has recorded is locked in his hand-written journals, making it difficult to quickly search for and find specific pieces of information.

With Dragon NaturallySpeaking, Checchio can dictate effortlessly all of his important fly-fishing information, and in turn, he can more easily find specific information in his notes with a quick search on his PC. Lastly, Checchio is able to create more vivid journal entries that he can share with his fly-fishing community.

"Using Dragon, I have really been able to enhance my fishing journal," says Checchio. "Because I can simply speak my entries, I am free to create more detailed, colorful notes, without sacrificing time, or my wrist. I've even been able to share my experiences, solutions, and fun memories very easily with other fishing enthusiasts around the country because I have an instant, electronic copy of my journal."

Greatest Productivity Gain - Peter Laipson

An independent secondary school history teacher, Peter Laipson relies on Dragon NaturallySpeaking to help him improve his students' writing. Using Dragon to comment on student projects has decreased the amount of time that Laipson spends grading papers by 40 percent over the alternative method of hand-writing comments. Using Dragon has also renewed Laipson's affection for student writing.

"Using Dragon NaturallySpeaking to comment on papers makes it easy to engage in a real conversation with my students in writing about their prose and ideas," says Laipson. "My summary comments on essays, in particular, are much more fully elaborated because Dragon can record my thoughts as quickly as I say them."

In addition to saving time and improving the quality of Laipson's feedback, Dragon also gives him a permanent electronic copy of all of his comments, a critical resource when it comes to writing both end-of-semester evaluations and college recommendations. Lastly, because Dragon NaturallySpeaking helps Laipson to provide more feedback to his students in a fraction of the time, the students benefit too through improvements in their writing.

"What is so striking to me is that Dragon has yielded a productivity gain not just for me but also for every student I teach," says Laipson. "The more comments the kids receive on their written work, the more prepared they are to improve their performance the next time they write, and that's good for everyone concerned."

Greatest Personal Impact - Rett Erickson

Rett Erickson is a bank vice president in Northern California who uses Dragon in both his personal and professional life. Since a spinal cord injury in high school left Erickson a high-level quadriplegic, he has relied on a wheelchair and mouth stick for mobility and to interface with his computer. Erickson faced additional challenges later in life due to seating pressure issues and was forced to spend more time out of his wheelchair, and in turn less time in his office. Erickson found that his productivity was severely impacted, and he was able to type only 12 to 15 words per minute with his mouth stick. About one year ago, Erickson decided to try Dragon NaturallySpeaking to regain his productivity through dictation, and he hasn't looked back since.

"I entered a new era of computer accessibility and productivity with Dragon NaturallySpeaking," says Erickson. "Dragon has reduced both my employer's frustration and my personal frustration and has dramatically increased my quality of life by allowing me to remain productive and to pursue computer activities. I am again able to utilize a computer completely to perform productive work, and can easily navigate Windows and dictate appraisal reviews and financial analysis on my computer - with just my voice."

The above winners will each receive a Garmin Nuvi 350 Pocket or Vehicle GPS Navigator as well as Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional 9, and upgrades for three years.

Since its introduction nearly ten years ago, Dragon NaturallySpeaking has become a regular fixture in businesses and homes around the world, and has a profound impact on those who use it. Millions of people every day rely on Dragon NaturallySpeaking to write novels, poems, and blogs; create an A+ book report; see more patients or clients; create presentations quickly in the office; use the PC hands-free; or chat with friends online.
