Now it's a whole new bawl game.

I remember that famous victory mentioned recently by a reader - Newcastle v Newport County.

My dad took me and we watched from the Popular side. I was 11 and, like all the other boys, sat on the stone kerb while my dad watched from the terraces a few rows back.

The score at half-time was something like 6-0 and I remember turning to my dad and shouting with joy. I knew enough about football to know that was an extraordinary score for a professional game.

Later there came all those FA Cup victories and, with the optimism of youth, I thought it would be like that forever. I hadn't realised then that this was Newcastle United, destroyer of dreams!
