Now Available: Self-Service Cafeterias in France.

[USPRwire, Wed Oct 07 2015] The increase of VAT from 7% to 10% in January 2014 reinforced the difficulties of self-service cafeterias in France. As happened over the review period, consumers preferred other types of foodservice establishments, notably fast food, which are less expensive, more modern and more adapted to eat quickly and on-the-go. In addition, the unfavourable economic environment continued to lead consumers to be careful with their expenditure regarding eating outside of the home. With the additional three percentage points of VAT, this channel also competed strongly with the packaged ready meals available in supermarkets and hypermarkets, in particular at dinner.

Competitive Landscape

Amongst chained operators, Flunch (Agapes Restauration) maintained its lead in self-service cafeterias in 2014. This chain led in terms of outlets, transactions and value sales in 2014, due to strong brand recognition and a low-price strategy. Flunch opened seven new outlets, the majority of them through franchising, located in malls or on motorways, reaching a total of 265 points of sale in France. Even so, its value sales and transactions decreased. Like the majority of the other operators it suffered from budget restrictions regarding purchases of food outside of the home, in particular amongst families, and from competition from other types of consumer foodservice establishments.

Industry Prospects

Owners of self-service cafeterias have a major challenge to overcome over the forecast period. They will need to modernise their concepts and develop new services, such as take-away, in order to adapt to changing consumer behaviours in terms of foodservice consumption. With a growing number of people expected to live in urban areas over the forecast period, consumers will be increasingly receptive to services which allow them to save time.
