WORCESTER -- The news came over the scanner like an April Fool's Day prank, but there was no kidding around about it.
Worcester police reported a goat was running from Leicester into the city near Webster Square around 7:45 a.m.
Later in the morning, a Craigslist ad popped up with a photo of the mischievous animal, saying the goat had been captured and was tied to a rope at 209 Stafford St, close to the AutoPro Import Repair parking lot.
A clerk at AutoPro, who asked not to be identified, said she posted the ad after she saw the goat wandering around the parking lot mid-morning. She snared the goat and delicately tied it to a tree. Around 1 p.m., she said, the goat's owner came by to pick up the little guy.
"He came and said it belonged to his mother. I guess she keeps it as a pet,'' the clerk said, "which would explain why it was so friendly.''
Leicester Police Chief Jim Hurley said his department was working with the goat's owner after she reached out to police on Facebook. The matter was then referred to Worcester's animal control department, which confirmed through a spokesman Wednesday afternoon the goat was back in the custody of its owner.
