Norwegian renewable energy firm Statkraft is planning to bid for hydroelectric contracts in France, according to a report in French newspaper Challenges on Thursday.

The contracts for France's hydroelectric dams come up for renewal next year, with some to be tendered for in 2020, the newspaper said.

Statkraft is Europe's largest generator of renewable energy, using hydropower, wind power, gas power and district heating. The company also develops solar power, marine energy and osmotic power.

The company posted gross operating revenues of NOK25.1bn and a net profit of NOK8.1bn in 2008.
