At Borderway Mart there was forward another impressive show of 1,139 head of store cattle. A large contingent of bidders ensured a strong trade was had by all, with many new vendors leaving the ring delighted. Young Cattle once again sold well.

The fortnightly sale sold 146 store cattle, including 44 breeding cattle, and 25 ewes and lambs. A good show of breeding cattle forward met a keen trade from a large ring of buyers.

Lim cows and bull calves: pounds 1,000 and pounds 900 St Martins. Lim cows and hfr calves: pounds 780 and pounds 760 St Martins. BB cows and bull calves: pounds 880 and pounds 830 Little Common. 14 cows and calves averaged pounds 806. Lim hfrs (ran with bull): pounds 760, pounds 650 and pounds 630 Little Common. BB hfrs (ran with bull): pounds 660, pounds 620 and pounds 610 Little Common. 20 averaged pounds 650.

Lim hfrs: pounds 550 Whittle, pounds 550 and pounds 500 Framhill, pounds 500 and pounds 478 Church Farm. Angus hfrs: pounds 505 and pounds 500 Cramhill. Char hfrs: pounds 488 and pounds 410 Framhill, pounds 472 Shipley Hill.

May 4

There was an entry of 209 prime cattle, with 29 prime bulls, and 497prime sheep, including 373 spring lambs.

Another large show of prime cattle with prices dearer on the week and bulls met a similar trade.

Heifers made to 136.5p per kg paid for a Limousin cross heifer shown by Messrs R E Miller, West Farm, Aspatria which was bought by Mr Geoff Riley, Burnley.

The top price per head was pounds 783.85 for a Limousin cross shown by J G & J Bowe, Mechi Farm, Blennerhasset, and was bought by M Wharton, Butcher, Wigton.

Steers sold to a top of 135.5 p per kg. This was paid to Messrs A D & A Richardson, Low Bank End, Appleby, for a Limousin cross which was purchased by R Harrison, Butcher, Wigton.

The top price per head was pounds 867.65 paid to Ashburner Ltd, High House, Sandwith, Whitehaven for a Limousin cross and was purchased by Woodhead Bros. Colne, Lancashire.

Bulls made 132.5p per kg for a Limousin shown by Messrs Watson, Cunningarth, Wigton and bought by S Stoddart, Wigton on behalf of D Nattrass, Butcher, The Market, Carlisle.

Top price per head was pounds 809.88 for a Limousin weighing 775 kgs and sold for 104.5p shown by T A & J Brownrigg, How Hill, Hutton Roof, and bought by M Atkinson for Cleveland Meat Company

The consignment of Continental cross Heifers from Messrs R E Miller, West Farm averaged 128.79p, David Anderson of Crosby House Farm averaged 128.01p, Messrs Batty, Cobble Croft averaged 119.22p. Limousin cross steers from J & SD Wood, Croft House averaged 124.43p, and from Ashburner Ltd, High House, Sandwith averaged 118.87p.

Consignments from J G & J Bowe, Mechi Farm, Blennerhasset, averaged 119.36p.

Bulls from W J & E Bell, Raise Lodge averaged 119.95p

A much larger entry of spring lambs was forward.

Quality well finished 38kg to 45 kg lambs were in demand. However, overweight and over fat lambs were harder to cash.

The overall average of 150p per kg was well above the average market trade.

The top price was pounds 97.50 paid for Texel lambs shown by J G & J Bowe, Mechi Farm, Blennerhasset, Aspatria, and bought by R Harrison, Butcher, Wigton.

The top price per kg was 214p paid for Texel lambs shown by T & E A Todd, Tiffenthwaite Farm, Wigton and again bought by R Harrison, Butcher, Wigton.
