Northampton 1 Cambridge 2.

Captain Micah Hyde stole the show as his side avenged last season's league double at the hands of Northampton.

His 31st-minute header put Cambridge ahead after Northampton had squandered a fistful of chances and 12 minutes after half time it was his mazy run from defence that set Tony Richards up for the second.

Neil Grayson went close on three occasions in the first half, his best effort a shot against the underside of the crossbar.

Northampton finally clawed their way back into the contest after 61 minutes when David Rennie's 30-yard free kick was deflected by Ian Sampson to give Scott Barrett no chance.
