North's squad is top of the class! Junior athletics.

Byline: BILL McGUIRK

COMPETITORS chasing English Schools' qualification were hampered by gusty conditions at the annual four-cornered Inter-Counties Schools' match at Claireville Stadium, Middlesbrough. Sprinters, especially, were out of luck having to contend with a a head wind.

Despite that, spectators were rewarded with excellent competition throughout the day as Northumberland lifted the overall trophy.

The throwing events in particular were of high quality, Cleveland's Aaron Jeal and Martin Croft winning the hammer event at junior and intermediate level.

Northumberland's Reece Straker came out on top in the senior age group.

Jack Smith repeated his Northumberland Schools' victory to take the senior honours in the shot put competition.

There was a 400m and long-jump double for teammate Reuben Cole at intermediate level.

Durham also had numerous successes both among the field events and the track.

Markham Lonsdale was first across the line in both the junior 800m and 1,500m while 2011 English Schools' champion Anthony Hogg won the intermediate high jump with a clearance of 1:90m.

Oliver Whellans recorded victories in both the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles at intermediate level, while in the same age group Durham's Thomas Goulding won the 3,000m.

In the senior girls' section, Durham were particularly strong - winning five of the 10 events.

Amy Etherington claimed victory in the 1,500m, Sarah Purkis won the long jump, Abigail Smith came out on top in 100m hurdles, Rachel Scott took the 400m hurdles and Carrie Lamb was best at the javelin.

Northumberland's sole success at senior girls level came in the high jump with Hannah Briggs clearing 1:45m for victory.

OVERALL RESULT: 1 Northumberland 574pts; 2 Durham 477; 3 Cumbria 434; 4 Cleveland 388.
